Why most wedding directories only show you advertisers

A short explanation of the business model, and why this site works differently.

The large wedding marketplaces do not charge couples. They charge venues, by the month, for the right to appear. That is a legitimate business, but it has one structural consequence worth understanding while you plan: if a venue does not pay, you generally do not see it.

What that does to your search

The list you are shown is not the list of venues near you. It is the list of venues near you that bought a subscription this year. Small family-run barns, farms that host six weddings a season and anywhere that is already fully booked by word of mouth are frequently missing, and those are often the interesting ones.

How this site is built instead

We index venues whether or not they pay us, from public sources, and we let owners claim their listing for free and correct it. Money comes from venues choosing to be featured, not from being allowed to exist. A featured listing is marked as featured so you always know which is which.

That is the whole difference. Everything else, the photographs and the filters and the guides, follows from it.
