Every venue says it has one. Most of them are a tent quote and a hope.
An outdoor wedding is an indoor wedding that got lucky. The question is not whether the venue has a plan B, it is whether you would be happy having your wedding in it.
The test
Ask to stand in the rain plan. If the answer is "we move it into the barn", ask where the tables go, and how long the flip takes, and who does it, and where guests stand while it happens. If the answer involves a tent, ask for the cut-off date for ordering one and the price, and get both in writing.
What good looks like
- A covered space that holds your full guest count seated, not standing.
- A flip plan with staff attached to it and a stated time, usually 45 to 60 minutes during cocktails.
- Solid ground or a path from parking that does not become mud.
- Heaters or fans that already exist on site rather than a rental line item.
- A decision deadline: who calls it, and by what time on the day.
The cheap insurance
Tent holds are typically free or refundable up to a week or two out. Place one for any outdoor ceremony between April and June anywhere east of the Rockies. Releasing a hold costs nothing. Ordering a tent on Thursday costs a great deal.
